If I were rating this movie solely on quality of the film, it would get one star. if i were rating it solely on how much i love to watch it even though it’s awful, it would get 5 stars. SO I averaged it and got 3.

The dialogue is horrendous, the effects cheesy, the music (not the soundtrack which is great, but the score) indescribably awful. It looks like a made for TV movie.

However- I can’t stop watching it. i saw it 3 times in the theater and pre-ordered my own copy. It entertains me. Plus, Edward is nice to look at… oh, James too. LOVE James. To me this movie is absolutely hysterical- where it doesn’t intend to be. The scene where Edward first sees Bella in class and he looks as if he may throw up on her??? Great! The look that Billy Black and Edward exchange as they pass each other in their cars? Priceless. I love the baseball scene! But the crouch down and prepare to fight stance they take at the end… Can anybody say Power Rangers? But just mentioning all this makes me want to watch it again. I know it makes no sense. It just has that power.

I should be embarrassed to like this, but I’m not. I will watch it over and over again proudly. I will recommend it to anyone I can. Watch it and love it. But know that it’s terrible and know that it can’t compare to the book and that all of it’s charm is due to it’s cheesiness.

I had heard about the fantasy books by a friend when they first came out but didn’t have the time to look into them. By the time the movie came out, I’d nearly forgotten about the book referral, but asked my hubby to take me as it looked like a good vampire romance flick. The scenery of the Pacific Northwest forests, rivers, and coastline was breathtaking and as a native to this area, it was like going out into my own backyard which made the film that more appealing. I was so captivated by the actors portrayal of the characters (the facial expressions and emotions brought out of the characters by Rob, Kristen, Peter, Nikki, and the rest were mesmerizing) and the depth of the back-story left me desiring more! The very next day after viewing the movie in the theater – I raced to the bookstore to grab the first book. I was hooked, read through all four books (plus went to the authors website to read the extra materials she had posted there) in a week. Then, still not satisfied, went back and saw the movie several more times – IN THE THEATER, something I’ve never felt compelled to do before – because I was so drawn to the characters and the story. This may have been written for the young adult audience but I’m 32 and a parent of four children, and still found the story to be well worth my time.

If you haven’t read the stories, I encourage you to do so. Regardless, this film will be a treasured part of your movie collection and one you’ll be sure to watch several times before you’ll feel satisfied.

Asa is a young Kazakh who, having completed his military service, wants to return home and become a sheep farmer. The problem is he must first be married and the only eligible woman within many miles, the shy and elusive Tulpan, is just not interested.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Tulpan! Click Here

Celebrated Kazakh documentary filmmaker Sergey Dvorsevoy won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes for this, his first dramatic feature. Astonishing in its simplicity and for its intimate depiction of rural life, the film is also surprisingly funny – a simple humor that is far removed from that of the more popular but utterly false portrayal of Kazakhstan in Borat.

The performances, mostly by individuals who had never acted before, are astonishingly genuine. It’s hard to believe they are playing a role, and that this is not a documentary. Even more stunning is the authenticity of the scenes. There is, obviously, no CGI here, and nothing is fake, but through patience Dvortsevoy was able to capture some surprising and exciting moments – a twister that appears suddenly in the midst of a confrontation between two characters, an angry camel mother attacking the vet who cares for her son, a sheep giving birth and a genuine performance of Asa’s surprise and wonder and helplessness, all in a single take without cuts. Lovers of great films should celebrate this deceptively simple and lovely film.

Dense with the realism and light humor of daily existence, Tulpan at times has the feel of a documentary, yet it is a touching fictional tale about finding one’s place in the world.

Asa returns from naval service and has expansive dreams of a free and prosperous life on the Kazakh steppe. For them to come true, his brother-in-law must give him a starter herd, he must find a wife in a desert devoid of humans, and he must earn his stripes as a herder. Asa is impatient, does not fit in, and seems powerless to realize his dreams. When he is pushed to the brink, ready to give up on his dream, he has a transforming experience of life and rebirth. (As reviewed in Russian Life)

Dvortsevoy films with a patient eye (Tulpan took four years to film), turning the gritty landscape into a character in the film, helping to convey the utter isolation (but not hopelessness) of life on the barren steppe. This is a quixotic and delightful tale of self-discovery that offers a vivid look at what life is like in this secluded corner of the world.

It’s gigantic to finally have the opportunity to review this spectacular concert DVD and CD. The clarity of the audio recording and the recount itself is extraordinary, and they didn’t hack the concert in the editing room when it was assign from DVD to CD. You bag almost the entire audio recording on the CD, including most of the verbal contact Sarah has with the audience. I assume this CD is 100 times better than the Harem World Tour CD recording, which makes this package a totally worthwhile occupy. The photos are comely and the printing of the glossy booklet produce everything perceive so nice. The DVD is purple and the CD is sunless, with silver lettering on both. As for the artwork of the DVD insert, there is silver lettering on both front and abet. The interview with some of the Cathedral’s staff is really nice and they note unbiased how appreiative they were of having Sarah form in their majestic historical building.

Sarah’s costumes and hair are exquisite and she is definitely exquisite and looking more glorious than ever. There is one diminutive inequity from the studio recording of “Fleurs Du Mal” and the recording in this package. What I’m saying is…Sarah doesn’t do that high-pitched vocalise while the violin solo comes in in the intro of the song, compared to the studio album recording. I wonder if it would’ve wrecked the intro to the song if she did deny it while gripping down the middle aisle.

“Sanvean” written by Lisa Gerrard (Plain Can Dance) is a shapely vocalise consisting of no lyrics but objective sounds. That is what I like about this song. It’s objective so haunting and unusual, and Sarah does it very well, even if some say she’s too breathy. “Canto Della Terra” is fair and Alessandro Safina looks and sounds astounding as Sarah’s duet partner. Together, they blow everyone away with their breathtaking live rendition of the song. “Atessa” is very graceful and great better than expected. It really doesn’t appear they stale any playback for this concert, meaning Sarah old her have screech for the whole recording. I was actually expecting Atessa to be dubbed from the studio recording because of that very outstanding high impress at th slay, which is incredibly hard to do without screaming it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Symphony: Live in Vienna! Click Here

“POTO” turned out to be quite nice, although it was a miniature too fast-paced compared to the unusual version. But the rock concert edge gives it a totally recent edge and Sarah was aloof able to say over the volume of the rock band and the pipe organ high above her and Chris Thompson. Oh, that reminds me, my only negative comment would be….Chris Thompson looks like someone they dragged off the street to duet with Sarah. He sounded a microscopic tired in “I will be with you”. He sounded winded although he peaceful had a rock edge to his teach…and to his style. But, on “POTO” he and Sarah really blew me away when I watched the performance for the 1st time.

It’s really improbable to have this glorious DVD&CD package and I’ll adore it for many years to reach. This is by far, Sarah’s best live performance on DVD, to date…although there are some really incredible live performances on her other live DVDs. But this one really showcases Sarah’s live singing say, and how well she can work with a rock band. Gather this item and you’ll agree, it’s totally worth the wait and the money.

If Sarah Brightman possesses anything, it is professional integrity. Every detail of her musical and stage productions exude a style, elegance and grace seen by few performers of her day. Meticulous with details, she truly strives to transport her fans to a different world.

With “Live in Vienna” Brightman has truly delivered a glowing concert both visually and musically. The setting, the Cathedral Stephensdom in Vienna. The cinematography fused with the breathtaking visuals creates an astounding experience for the viewer.

Either draped in a red shapely gown or a metallic gold corset, the style of the early renaissance clearly comes across in the custom made couture.

Brightman soars through nearly all the tracks from her most unusual platinum release “Symphony”. The songs from Symphony plan inspiration from gothic musical aspects, creating a rock/metal influenced operatic sound. “Fleurs Du Mal” (The opening song) sets the bar high. The song infuses rock and opera elements flawlessly giving it a very recent yet familiar sound. The highlight of the evening comes when Brightman teams up with Chris Thompson on the rock inspired duet “Phantom of the opera” The song is given a unusual makeover complete with bombastic drums and a worthy organ.

By concerts destroy, Brightman reminds us why she is the most successful soprano in history (Over 26 million records sold) when she delivers the heavenly “Time To Say Good-bye”, poignant for such a special and titillating evening.

War of the Worlds has been on DVD before, but it’s noteworthy better in this special edition, restored and presented, thankfully, in rotund frame, as it was shot. The print quality is unprejudiced gorgeous, and the movie looks as suitable as it’s ever looked. Special features are also of a high standard: especially welcome are the commentaries by stars Ann Robinson and Gene Barry. Barry seems a diminutive less in state than Robinson, but she graciously compensates, by eloquently describing her experiences, her affection for Barry and producer George Pal, and the film itself, with which she seems wonderfully familiar. Her insight is detailed, sometimes droll, exhaustive, and genuinely revealing–even down to the revelation of a cameo by Woody Woodpecker. Images are so crisp that the wires supporting the ships are sometimes sadly visible, but fans will be so caught up in the terrifying legend that this won’t matter worthy at all. For those who like this film, I’d say obtain out there and take this up: someone got it good, and went to the effort to reveal this admired film in an edition that can really be called “special”. What a pleasure to watch primitive Technicolor the draw it was meant to be seen! A mammoth movie, and a stout DVD.

Based on H.G. Wells’ classic unique, George Pal’s The War Of The Worlds is a classic in its absorb legal. The movie transfers the record from England and the turn of the century to California and the 1950’s. Some people gawk the paranoia of the ’50s in the movie but the unique also had a strong theme of panic of things beyond our ken. Pal often included a religious theme in his movies and this film would have been better without it, but it does not detract from the movie enough to preserve it from being a classic. The sage is that of an invasion of Earth by coldly colorful Martians. Told in positive, valorous strokes with exceptional special effects (for the time) and handsome performances by the two leads, Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, The War Of The Worlds should be in every collection of science fiction movies.

The DVD transfer is salubrious. The report is arresting and determined. The color is strong and rich, as Technicolor should be. Like most people, I had only seen this movie on television and it never looked as fine as it does on DVD. The record resolution is so honorable that you can easily seek the wires supporting the Martian war machines. The sound does not measure up to the standard of the video. It is mono and there are cracks and pops on the sound track during the early piece of the movie, though I didn’t study them as grand in the later scenes (but that may simply be because I was caught up in the excitement of the myth) . The disk provides only a trailer as supplemental material (I don’t contemplate scene selection to be a special feature, it should be standard on any DVD) . The disk is formatted in TV standard but that is not significantly different from the movie’s unusual ratio, since it was not shot in what we now call widescreen.

Although I would have liked to look more supplemental material, this is detached a attractive DVD of a nearly fifty year ancient movie that has not received the special treatment of movies like The Wizard Of Oz.

What can one say about this film. I consider this Delmer Daves’ masterpiece. It was the first of four productions that teamed Daves and Troy Donahue (Parrish, Susan Slade and Rome Adventure followed). Troy Donahue was never noted for any great acting prowess, but he did represent the last breed of the innocent clean-cut naive teenager. This was Donahue’s strong point and Daves used that persona expertly and effectively to extract the longing for the eternal youthful spirit in all of us. That is why this film is so viewable to this day. To paraphrase Richard Egan’s character in the film: Our only purpose is to love and be loved. That is what this film is all about. Visually it is breathtakingly and lushly photographed by Harry Stradling. The dialog is juxtaposed between crisp witty cynicism at times and then beautiful tender passages of poetic expressions of love. The Max Steiner score and love theme have become interwoven into our everyday society as effectively as they mirrored the emotions of the characters in this film. The story at its most basic level is one of adultery and teenage love canvassed on an island on the Maine coast. However, the motivations and the ramifications of the characters’ actions run much deeper. The expert cast includes Richard Egan, Dorothy McGuire, Sandra Dee, Constance Ford, Beulah Bondi and the actors’ actor Arthur Kennedy. This film was based on the Sloan Wilson novel. This is one of my favorite films. I highly recommend it. The VHS copy is very good.

DVD please? I saw this movie when it aired on A&E, and it captivated me as a child, and still does as an adult. The theme song is great, and I still find myself listening to it!!! I became a fan of Sandra Dee’s after I saw her in “Gidget” and “Imitation Of Life” and I thought her performance was so real and heart-wrenching. Constance Ford, as her bitchy, controlling mother Helen, gives a strong portrayal of a bitter, frigid, unhappy woman who takes her anguish out on everyone around her, even her daughter. (She really gives Mommie Dearest a run for her money). The scene where she forces Molly to submit to a pelvic exam after she and lover-boy Johnny (the late Troy Donahue) have an accident on the beach (the boat capsizes) is horrible and makes the viewer grimace. The fact that the doctor was old and gross looking, and began to unbutton Molly’s blouse without her consent, as she screamed, “Oh please, no, I want my father! I’ve been a good girl! I haven’t done anything wrong!!” makes it uncomfortable, but it also makes you despise Ford’s character, as I’m sure that was the intention. Richard Egan as Molly’s father Ken, is so handsome and gentle at times (he was equally effective in Walt Disney’s “Pollyanna” as Dr. Chilton) is a man who is trapped in a loveless marriage who finds and falls in love again with Dorothy McGuire, as Sylvia, his first love, who also happens to be the mother of Molly’s boyfriend, Johnny!!! One of Egan’s best lines is as he and Helen are having an explosive argument. Ken finishes off his end by saying, “Why must you insist on making sex itself a filthy word!” Arthur Kennedy, as Johnny’s drunken father Bart was one of the actor’s best later performances. The conflict between the two couples and the predicament that follows (Molly becomes pregnant by Johnny) was considered racy for its day, but considering how little is shown, you have to wonder what all the fuss was about!!! (Although the “King Kong” reference could bear some debate on that subject). The argument between Molly and her mother at the beginning of the movie, sums up the times and also, in a way, the relationships between mothers and daughters. Molly: “Daddy, do I have to?” Ken: “Do you have to what?” Molly: “Wear this middy blouse to shore like a twelve-year-old! And she says I have to wear this armor-padded bra to flattenme out and a girdle! This thing even hurts, and I couldn’t squeeze into this girdle with dynamite!”

It appears to be a soapy melodrama, but it really is a touching piece of nostalgia. Let’s hope a DVD release is in the works!!! We all need to get away to “A Summer Place”!!!!!!!!

I used to have the DVD of Decca version of La Traviata featuring Angela Gheorghiu. I liked it but this blu-ray provides a whole new experience with its great high definition vision and audio. Ms. Gheorghiu, as Violetta, performs amazingly in both singing and acting. It’s great to observe all the details of the singer’s facial expressions and gestures in hi-def. Mr. Vargas, as Alfredo, performs very well even though his acting is rather clumsy. The baritone, as the father, sings flawlessly. I thought the production was also excellent. I expected more from the Gypsy’s dance/song but all in all this title deserves five stars.

This blu-ray is my very first opera title and I’m more falling in love with blu-ray after watching this Verdi’s masterpiece. I know I’ll be watching it over and over again especially the first act.

Technically, it was shot in 1080i and features PCM 2.0 & DTS HDMA 7.1 audio track. No extras.

“La Traviata” is probably Verdi’s most popular opera, despite the fact that the leading role, Violetta, is notoriously difficult to sing. I’ve seen Traviata in the house maybe 4 or 5 and have walked away unsatisfied each time. And it was always because I found the Violetta dearly wanting in some aspect.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Verdi: La Traviata! Click Here

On paper, this video, released by La Scala, should leap to the very top of great Traviatas on video. Angela Gheorghiu became a star in the 1994 Covent Garden production of Traviata and 13 years later, she’s still one of the world’s leading Violettas. Ramon Vargas has exactly the right type of voice for Alfredo — warm, ardent, youthful (even though by now he looks rather portly and middle-aged). Roberto Frontali does no harm as Germont. The production is gorgeous — very traditional, but not tacky. The costumes are lavish and capture the wasteful, decadent life of the Parisian demi-monde.

Yet Gheorghiu’s Violetta has, unfortunately, not really deepened over the years. The 1994 production of Traviata was caught on video and Gheorghiu’s Violetta back then still had an appealing air of youthful innocence, which added immeasurably to her portrayal. Her naturally smoky, dusky voice gave her Violetta the right amount of melancholy. Her snow-white skin and dark hair made her look disconcertingly like the portraits of the real life Violetta, a French courtesan named Marie Duplessis. Most of all, her Violetta was still a young lady who seemed to sincerely crave romantic love. The Alfredo (Frank Lopardo) and the Germont (Leo Nucci) were not on the level of Vargas or Filanoti, but Gheorghiu’s Violetta was so compelling it didn’t matter.

Thirteen years later, Gheorghiu’s voice is still enchantingly smoky and dusky, but she’s a Diva, and her portrayal has hardened. She has become a rather calculating performer. It’s unreasonable to expect her Violetta to still have the youthful freshness of her 1994 portrayal, but I wish she projected more genuine vulnerability. Her grand gestures and facial expressions make it clear that she considers herself as Tragedienne, but in the end it’s not particularly affecting.

There are positives to her portrayal. For one, she and Ramon Vargas have now sung together in quite a few productions and they have that intangible chemistry that was so lacking between her and Lopardo. And although her accuracy in florid passage may not match Maria Callas or Joan Sutherland, she gets through “Sempre libera” much better than most sopranos today. Moreover, her voice is not large, but to her credit she seems to know this and never tries to oversing. This is clearly a soprano who knows her vocal strengths and weaknesses, and seeks to maximize the former and minimize the latter.

Yet at the end of the day a Violetta should break your heart, not simply impress you. I found Gheorghiu more impressive than affecting, and so I don’t think I’ll be returning to this video anytime soon.

This is such a classic and defining reveal of the nineties, and while it’s a shame to not gape a worthy release of the present on DVD, I’m tickled for the opportunity to at least acquire the episodes in chronological order on these Made On Inquire DVD-R’s. 10 Weaning Tommy / Incident In Aisle Seven

11 Touchdown Tommy / The Trial

12 Fluffy Vs. Spike / Reptar’s Revenge

13 Graham Canyon / Stu-Makers’ Elves

Having now watched all the episodes on DVD I can say that the audio and video quality is not something you should be disturbed about when buying these Made On Inquire sets. I am very uptight when it comes to the quality of the things I have and I can say that all the episodes were presented in the same, if not better than, quality they originally aired. My only advise as far as any of the Amazon Made On Request sets is that being a purist I’d like the opening theme to play before every episode and not honest the first one on each disc, but that’s a very minor jabber.

I personally had no yelp playing the DVD-R type discs on any of my DVD player’s or even on my Sony DVD Recorder. I have purchased several different Nickelodeon series (Doug, Hey Arnold & Rugrats) on Amazon ‘MOD’ sets now and had no order with the characterize or sound quality on any of them and they have all played beautiful on my DVD player’s.

It feels like we’ve walked fifteen miles uphill both ways for even the chance to possess these episodes on DVD. Objective by reading the names of these episodes memories from my childhood came flooding support. I hope that someday Nickelodeon or someone will release these episodes in estimable season sets with novel artwork and special features, but for now I had given up hope for the chance to occupy these episodes on DVD at all and I’ll acquire what I can score. Here’s hoping that Amazon will release more seasons of Rugrats and my other accepted nineties shows on these sets. Thanks for your time.

*For those enthusiastic I’ve included episode summaries in my comments fraction to avoid cluttering the review page. Thanks.

Rugrats was my absolute approved cartoon reveal when I was younger and I am thrilled that it is finally available on DVD. The exhibit itself easily gets 5 stars from me (well, the first few seasons at least, though it went downhill lickety-split when they started adding characters, like Dil and especially Kimi, later on) so this review will mainly conceal the quality of the DVD site and not the indicate itself. I will unprejudiced briefly touch on the quality of the cartoons.

For those who may not have seen the prove, or the first season of it, the animation is Grand rougher and shakier than in later seasons, but as always the writing is generous, and because of this the display appeals to all ages, not unprejudiced the young kids it was intended for. I own that other reviewers have already sufficiently covered which episodes are on this station, so I won’t demolish the time or station covering it again.

Now then, onto the DVDs:

This 3-disc site is packaged in a very generic, standard plastic DVD case. Nothing love, but it certainly gets the job done. Same basic memoir with the package art. It’s very generic, but it does narrate the series unbiased exquisite so I really have no complaints about it. One VERY minute plight I have with the art, though, is that, being the obsessive person that I am, I wish they had ragged the classic Rugrats logo rather than that slightly different modern one (which has never been broken-down in the real display, only on products like books, toys, and DVDs) .

The DVDs are made to order on request by Amazon.com, and therefore are DVD-R formatted. I understand that some people have had effort playing the discs in previous sets like this, but they all work impartial shapely on all of the DVD players in my house. The product overview says that they may not play on recorders or PC drives, but they play unprejudiced elegant on my recorder and on my Mac. I do not possess a Blu-Ray player, so I cannot say whether or not they play on one, but I imagine that if it is DVD-R compatible, than these discs would play there, as well.

The characterize quality of the episodes is astounding. Honestly it looks better here than it ever did on Nickelodeon. There are a few peculiar things going on with the color at times but that is fraction of the new episode, not this DVD. The sound is as genuine as it ever was for this prove. One complaint I have with the presentation is that the opening theme sequence is on each disc only once. Each episode has the complete ending credits intact, though.

Being the burn on expect space that it is, there are NO extras whatsoever. Personally, this doesn’t bother me as I usually exhaust DVD extras once, at most. I understand that some people fully inquire all DVDs to have extras, but for me, it unbiased isn’t that sizable of a scrape. That said, it would have been nice if they had included the pilot episode of the series. (Note: the pilot HAS already been released on DVD, though, on the Decade in Diapers compilation) .

Overall, I would have been pleased to consume Rugrats on DVD in any effect, so buying this was a no-brainer for me. If you are expecting DVD extras, well…don’t. But the episodes themselves are presented well. I wish they had included the pilot, but since I can secure it elsewhere it doesn’t bother me too considerable. I grew up watching Rugrats and I am very jubilant to finally hold a complete season position on DVD. I hope they regain all the rest of the pre-Dil episodes out soon, as well. Bottom line: if you are like me and grew up watching this indicate, you will be very delighted with this DVD location.

This is a must have video for players and composers who have little comprehension of the specific connections between blues and jazz. It contains enough to decipher a jazz tune or build one up from blues, and even to create songs in styles along the blues to jazz continuum.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Don Mock: The Blues From Rock To Jazz! Click Here

Besides chords and their roll in progression style, Don shows scale and arpeggio choices for improvisation over those chords, along with examples of specific licks (some fairly lengthy – oh yeah..). This DVD comes with a PDF file containing note-for-note transcription sheet music with tab and guitar neck diagrams that shows all the examples played on the video, and a few extra extended scale & arpeggio solos.

Don Mock is a great guitarist and teacher (especially in Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz, and Theory). His DVDs, whether his own tutorials or his productions of other players (e.g. Joe Pass), are always worth owning because they are so informative and well balanced between playing specifics and music theory that they are reference tools good for a life time, and should hold their resale value (though I plan to keep mine).

Also see Don’s booklet Guitar Axis Master Class ‘Turnarounds’ with CD, it reveals a great yet manageable way of dealing with turnarounds; and it is another example of Don’s ability to really give you tools and knowledge to quickly get the job done; and it is a perfect companion to ‘The Blues from Rock to Jazz’.

This is a great, simple and well played complete guitar lesson for a jazz guitar student!

Don Mock has a great touch and tempo in playing modern guitar he can sing what he’s playing and what most he can teach with the right feeling and make things very simple to understand and learn.

Quite a good choice !!

When the Japanese lost the war, this trauma had to be explained and given meaning. Ironically, shortly after Hiroshima, certain Japanese films critiqued the aggressive militarism that led to the disaster [See Kurosawa's "No Regrets for our Youth]. Then, the Japanese films changed. They stopped focusing on their own culpability in the disaster or their own war crimes, and concentrated on the loss, tragedy, and sorrow of losing so many Japanese sons. This film, “Twenty-Four Eyes,” fits into that category…and for that reason has been so popular in Japan for fifty years.

As an example, when World War II looms, the boy students talk about becoming soldiers. Their teacher, Ms Oishe, responds that she prefers fishermen or rice sellers to soldiers. Later she is criticized gently for her “lack of patriotism” in her speech to the boys. To be fair, one aspect of anti-militarism ..the loss of freedom of speech…is well handled.

The story focuses on a self-sacrificing teacher and her relationship to 12 students over two decades. Everything is filmed around a small village bordering the ocean. Over these many years, the female teacher forges strong emotional bonds with all her students…and so when the boys go to war…and some don’t return, her deep, personal loss is as extreme as that of a parent. The themes are reinforced though the changing moods of the sea or of the folk songs which the school chants. It’s a very finely done film, although perhaps overly sentimental for my tastes. A great deal of attention is given to the serene, contemplative cinematography.

But…the director certainly never addresses the many injustices practiced by the Japanese on so many other Asian peoples. It reminded me, in a way, of the Buddhist movie “The Burmese Harp”…another excellent anti-war film that also sidesteps the issue of Japanese culpability. Nevertheless, few films are so poignantly intimate in treating the loss of life in war as this Japanese study. It does this because it slowly acquaints the viewer with the daily lives of the twelve boys and girls – all adorable – who grow up with their teacher in the small, poor village on the sea. In other words, the memory of the soldiers…as children…is a very important perspective because what this film does, which no other movie does quite as well, is to depict war as The Death of Innocence.

Recommended.

This movie has been considered a classic in Japan since its release in 1954, and it’s easy to see why. It begins as a charming, innocent portrait of a new teacher and her first grade class and slowly deepens into a touching yet realistic depiction of how each child’s life goes on in its own way. Some of the children prosper, some fall into poverty and tragedy, but the matter-of-fact way that profound emotional issues are handled in this film without putting off the viewer is a feat that has never been accomplished so well before or since. A truly remarkable piece of art.
